So we’re really looking forward to it, actor Sean Penn said. Sean Penn is ecstatic that his relief organization will sponsor runners from Haiti to participate in the New York City Marathon next month. “We’ve got five Haitian runners, 10 runners total, running for the team representing Haiti and our organization J/P HRO coming to the New York City Marathon – the marathon. So we’re really looking forward to it,” Penn said. The 53-year old actor, who spoke to The Associated Press on Saturday night, expressed satisfaction that the organization continues to rebuild Haiti with its medical, relocation, structural and community development programs -but also that it brings hope to the island nation. “It’s rewarding. I just came back from Port-au-Prince, where I visited our Haitian marathon runners, and to see that great discipline that Haitians have and that great spirit and the excitement that they have visiting New York for the first time.” RELATED: MADONNA PARTIES WITH EX-HUSBAND SEAN PENN AT FILM LAUNCH Penn started the J/P Health Relief Organization after a catastrophic magnitude-7.0 earthquake ripped through Haiti in January 2010, killing more than 100,000 people. The organization set up camps for displaced residents and facilitated medical clinics. It continues to save lives and brings sustainable programs to benefit the nation. Penn acts as CEO and chairman of the board for the organization. When asked if his efforts to make a meaningful and lasting impact in Haiti made him proud, Penn responded: “I’ve got a group I’m very proud of and really inspired by. Let’s say I’ve been granted a fortunate ticket in.” The two-time Oscar-winning actor made the comments at the world premiere of his film “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” at the New York Film Festival.
New York City Marathon Signs Tata Consultancy as Title Sponsor
The annual race through the five boroughs will be known as the TCS New York City Marathon under an eight-year agreement. Financial terms werent disclosed. ING U.S. Inc. said about two months ago that it would end its sponsorship of the marathon after this years race as it moves away from its Dutch owner, ING Groep NV (INGA) , which has sponsored the event since 2003. The NYRR was seeking a partner that shared the belief in unlocking the potential in people to run, and elevating the health and wellness of whole communities, said Mary Wittenberg, the Road Runners chief executive officer. Technology has become such a big driver and influence in the city, so we were especially excited to tie those two areas together, Wittenberg said in a telephone interview. Though the partnership is signed and work will begin now on improving the NYRRs technology structure, Wittenberg said, the name change will begin Nov. 4, the day after this years NYC Marathon that is expected to draw about 48,000 runners. TCS, a Mumbai-based part of Tata Sons Ltd., India s largest industrial conglomerate, has about 277,000 consultants in 44 countries, generating revenue of $11.6 billion for the fiscal year ending March 31, according to the statement. Other Marathons TCS has been the title sponsor of the Amsterdam Marathon and had smaller sponsorship deals with the races in New York, Boston , Chicago and Berlin, as well as running events in India. About 50 percent of TCSs business is U.S. based, according to Natarajan Chandrasekaran, chief executive officer.
